Miley Cyrus has had a tattoo inked on her chest in a heartfelt tribute to a pal who died of cystic fibrosis in 2007.

The Hannah Montana star's friend Vanessa passed away at the age of 12 and Cyrus has previously thanked Jonas Brothers singer Nick Jonas for helping her through the tragedy.

Now she's made a lasting memorial to her lost buddy, by having the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's motto "Just Breathe" tattooed below her left breast.

But the touching gesture has brought about its own controversy - several commentators are speculating whether 17 year old Cyrus broke the law with the body art.

Legislation prohibits tattoos for the under-18s - but some states allow younger teens to have body art if they have written consent from their parents.
