 Michael Jackson's vocals were included on the remake of We Are The World after his mom begged Lionel Richie and Quincy Jones to involve the late King of Pop on the charity song. The Thriller hitmaker recorded lead vocals on the original 1985 track, alongside artists including Stevie Wonder, Tina Turner, Ray Charles, Bruce Springsteen and Diana Ross.
A new group of singers have now collaborated on the song to raise funds for earthquake-ravaged Haiti, which was hit by a devastating tremor last month (12Jan10). Stars including Celine Dion, Kanye West and the Jonas Brothers perform on the new single, while Jackson's sister Janet has recorded Michael's words from the original charity song. And Richie and Jones decided to place Janet's vocals alongside her late brother's after the Jackson matriarch specifically requested his inclusion. Speaking to talk show host Larry King, Jones says, "(We included Michael) at his mother's request, and our desire. We kept Michael's... when we did the last one, we requested him to be there right after the AMAs at 10 o'clock, to be on the mic, to sing the lead as a demo for the rest of the people. He was there right on time. And he did it. And he doubled it. Now we've got Janet singing with him on it." Richie adds, "To have his voice in there - I must tell you, to have his presence, I was - I must admit, he was missed last night just in body. But I must tell you, to have his voice in there was just inspiring."
