Thousands of Lil Wayne fans were left disappointed on Friday night (18Dec09) when the rapper's show in Laredo, Texas was scrapped after he was detained on suspicion of drug possession. The hip-hop star was on his way to a gig at the Laredo Entertainment Center when his tour buses were stopped at a checkpoint by Border Patrol officers, who allegedly found a stash of marijuana.
The Lollipop hitmaker - real name Dwayne Carter - was detained along with 11 people. The group was questioned and later released without charge. The case has now been referred to the Brooks County Sheriff’s Department, where officials will determine whether anyone in the group will be cited for an offence. But concert organisers at the venue claim Carter's representatives failed to notify them about the drama, insisting they were forced to cancel the concert at the last minute when they were unable to get in touch with the group. The venue's marketing manager, Anissa Trevino, tells Texas publication the Corpus Christi Caller-Times that fans were "not very happy," but organisers are adamant the concert will still go ahead at a future date. She adds, "At this time it has not been cancelled, we are waiting to reschedule it." Carter's previous brushes with the law have landed him a year-long jail sentence for gun charges which is due to begin in February (10). He is also scheduled to stand trial in March (09) on unrelated drug possession charges following an arrest in Yuma, Arizona in January 2008.
