 Rage Against The Machine frontman Zack De La Rocha turned the airwaves blue on British radio on Thursday (17Dec09), performing an unedited curse-laden version of their controversial hit Killing In The Name. The band was invited onto BBC 5 Live's breakfast show to promote the 1992 track, currently favorite to be U.K. Christmas number one - thanks to a online campaign to keep the winner of TV talent show The X Factor off the top spot.
Show bosses asked frontman de la Rocha not to include the song's ending, in which he sings "F**k you, I won't do what you tell me" 16 times. But the singer refused, forcing producers to cut him off after he'd sung the line four times. A BBC spokesperson says, "We had spoken to the band repeatedly beforehand and they had agreed not to swear. "When they did, we faded the band out and said sorry immediately. We apologize again to anyone who was offended." Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello has praised the Killing In The Name campaign, aimed at The X Factor boss Simon Cowell and winner Joe McElderry, who is going up against the band with a cover version of Miley Cyrus' The Climb. He says, "I think people are just fed-up of being spoonfed some overblown sugary ballad that sits on top of the charts. It's a little dose of anarchy for the holidays."
