Irish rockers U2 have been named North America's most popular touring act of 2009.

The band took its 360 world tour to the continent in September and played 20 dates, with more scheduled throughout 2010.

And the gigs have now been labelled the hottest ticket of the year (09), with the group scoring sales of $123 million.

The figure puts U2's tour at the top of a new list by trade publication Pollstar, which rated Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band's trek in second place, with takings of $94.5 million.

In third place was Sir Elton John's Face-to-Face concerts with Billy Joel which made $88 million. The top five is rounded out by Britney Spears' Circus and AC/DC's Black Ice World Tour.

Country star Kenny Chesney, the Jonas Brothers and fellow Disney star Miley Cyrus also made the top 10.
